ReplyDeleteBless you for sharing those photos! I think that is great for people who villify you to see that you have a gentle face and that you may defy the image they may have of you in their mind's eye. I have always thought you should have your photo on your avatar for that reason ... as you may remember.
I also think it is grand for those who appreciate your blogging to see the image of your face and think about you sitting at your computer typing to share with and edify them.
I appreciate the photos because they will effect my prayers for these people - just seeing the images of their faces.

BTW, my brother once had hair down to his waist. My son has long hair too.
I had hair half-way down my back until I was 21.

Just kidding. If his hair was down to his waist I would still love him. Thats one prejudicial issue that I have had to work through and will admit as much. It is a cultural thing that Paul speaks to in the New Testement and definately not something to "split hairs" over:-)
I often think the only reason it ever really bothered me and why my brother probably grew long hair was the song my Dad used to sing in Hong Kong with the youth during the 70's. It went something like:

He used to sing it with his guitar. Ha Ha ha. It kind of goes to the tune of goober peas. It was one of Dads little hillbilly redneck songs from days gone by.

Anybody out there know that ol hillbilly redneck song?
Then I found out when Hudson Taylor went to China he shaved all his hair and grew in one spot a long pony tail and then that was all she wrote for him when word got back home.

ReplyDeleteI do not think Paul is speaking of culturally relative matters in 1 Cor 11. He makes too much reference to spiritual truths.
But I think in the West we assume that short hair means a short back and sides and long hair means any length from the collar.
I think Paul would probably have classed Antonio's hair as short. He probably would have understood long hair as waist length.
Preachers who want to have a go at long-haired men should get a bit tougher on the ladies with bobbed hair!

You, your fellow workers and the new converts and their children all wear beautiful open smiles that speak of God being there with you! I bet it was a really tremendous experience!
And about hair length!...
I bet Matthew is right about the Greco-Roman view of length, since after all, didn't Josephus say that Jesus wore his hair to his shoulders?
And for that matter, the fundy-Marine I know, my nephew Jimmy, had Ted Nugent length hair for years, then suddenly went back to the short marine style.
